Love Child: Selfies

SELFIES – THE LOVE CHILD WAY

Almost all of us do it. Doesn’t really matter where or when. I love it and do it every chance I get. It makes you feel good – before, during and after. And if you’re good at it, it makes you look great, too.
Selfies, that is. Smartphone self-portraits taken while extending one’s arm out fully, a global phenom since about 2004. Last year alone, when the Oxford Dictionaries coined it “word of the year,” apparently 57 million #selfie tags blew up on Instagram. Personally, I try to capture my look day and evening, sporting one of my fave Liebeskinds, natch.
Selfies are hot news right now, too. Super star soccer god David Beckham burned up the broadband after he snagged a family selfie during his wife’s NYFW runway show a couple days ago. LuckyMag.com sports tips from hairstylist Jen Atkin for mastering a super-hot selfie. There’s even “Me So Selfie,” the catchy Bonapart and Tim Fite song tearing up the ‘net. While some blogs say that selfies are out of control, shot in inappropriate places (like funerals or memorials) or ways (too sexual), others point to the narcissistic side of selfies, saying that selfies are a cry for help. At the beginning of the year, #365FeministSelfie, an Instagram selfie campaign kicked off as a backlash against all that.

I like to think of selfies as an expression of self-love, worth and acceptance. It’s not so much about the number of “likes” you get on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or Flickr. It’s more about the inner likes you give yourself, every day.
I really like Dove Soap’s #BeautyIs, a campaign aimed at redefining beauty that recently premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. Dove asked women to take “an honest selfie, with no filters, no edits. And to ask your mother to do the same.” Then they gave those selfies a gallery showing.
So, I tried a similar sort of test with our Liebeskind office and you can see above what my family of Love Children lensed.
What’s your favorite way to share a selfie and how do you style yourself?

Love Child: In the Stars

THE HANDBAG HOROSCOPE,
THE LOVE CHILD WAY

Say what you will, but this Love Child adores Red Carpet who-wore-what pre-Oscar antics like those from this past Sunday, and it got me pondering how those talented celebrity stylists pick the perfect dress, the flawless bag and the consummate shoes for each particular personality. What if stylists navigated dress choices based on celebrities’ astrological charts?! Stranger things have happened, I’m sure, but it’s a concept I stumbled upon in a recent HuffPo reading, where stargazer-to-the-stars JoAnn Reeves offered us mere mortals her Spring 2014 sartorial star predictions. With a nod to JoAnn and a twist on her take,  here’s a little Love Child Handbag Horoscope predicting.
Testing out JoAnn’s astrological insights on my three BFFs, I decided to pair them with the Liebeskind bag of their birthright.  Jonnie, born in April, is a Taurus, and our world-renowned astrologer notes that Taurus indulges in “elegance that can last a lifetime.” JoAnn points to scarves and “neck adornments” as the Taurian go-to. Me? I’m suggesting Liebeskind’s Ginny Vintage in New Flint. It’s classic. It’s sophisticated in that pale grey way. And its buttery elegance will endure a lifetime.

Tyrrany is a Scorp, just like me. JoAnn’s augury is right on target for us, and I love her recommendation that Scorpios get ready for some “fun and games.” Which I’m going to translate as pass go and head straight for the vintage leather Liebeskind Dinah satchel in a soft chambray-like blue. Great for anytime Tyrrany and I tap into our blue jeans and just wanna have a good time.

Which leaves me with Lily, a true conundrum. JoAnn anticipates “an intensely feminine look that speaks of a woman from another time or decade” for her sign, Aries. My interpretation? Lily’s BoHo chic/hippy chick nature will dig the Sue Vintage in nude. It’s a casual classic with a bit of sassy embellishment perfectly suited to now…as well as a former era.

So, what’s your sign and which Liebeskind bag is in your sartorial stars?

Love Child: Snakeskin

THE REPTILIAN REALITY
OF S-S-S-S-SNAKESKIN

It may be the Year of the Horse, darling Love Children, complete with all the requisite Chinese New Year festivities. But by my calendar, it’s the year of the Snake. Snakeskin, to be more exact.

Trust me. The temptation of this super hot animal skin pattern will be beyond your control. Already I’m falling for the trendy new bags slithering onto the shelves at Liebeskind’s SoHo boutique. The more pastel or vibrant the snakeskin hue, the better, so think pretty in pink…python. Or be rebellious in raucously-colored rattlesnake. I love Liebeskind’s pastel purple Lille handbag, as well as our light lime Madrid, a sort of two-tone tote with an almost iridescent yellow/blue effect and a handy side zipper. Don’t forget the neutral shades of tan and taupe, too. Anaconda, anyone?! I say, just be prepared to catch as many as you can. There’s no scaling back now!

Exotic, erotic, sensual, sultry. You can shed any fear of crawling into the woodwork when carrying one of these stunners. What a (snake) charmer you’ll be, with all eyes on you and your wild exotica. Snakeskin gives just the right amount of fashion bite to any outfit. Which is merely one of the reasons I love a reptilian rendition. Most people hate to admit wanting to be the center of attention. Not me! Put me in the middle of the room with a Liebeskind  snakeskin tote curled around each arm and I’ll be happily speaking in forked tongues, thank you very much!
How do you anticipate, erm, handling the snakeskin trend this season?

Love Child: Easter

SPRING: SPRUNG!
A SEASONAL SHOPPING DREAM

It’s about time, Love Children. Yes, it took until after Passover, Easter AND Coachella, but finally we get to welcome Spring to the fold.
And what better way to do so than to indulge in a little retail therapy? Thankfully, Liebeskind’s Spring Three collection bags are available this week in shop and online. Bonus selling point? Since some of the colors are a little “fall-spirational,” these are handbags that will lift you into spring and summer, and – as investment pieces – carry you easily into next fall.

Liebeskind’s EstherD in Light Plum  or Fenja Vintage in Ruby Red add sassy shade to any outfit.

Love Child: Mother's Style

THE MOTHER OF ALL
LOVE CHILD STYLE

Truly the most important woman in the world instilled in me my joie de vivre, sense of humor, sense of style, my very life. Seriously, there’s no doubt I’d be nowhere without her — who else could I be talking about but Mom?!

In celebration of the 100th anniversary of Mother’s Day next weekend, I’m honoring the style sensibility that I luckily inherited from Mother Love Child. Momma ingrained in me that there is always a correct handbag to accompany any situation, yet that doesn’t mean your bag has to match your shoes (waaaay old school).

Instead, she taught me that while the right bag is crucial, the best and the most important accessory is always a smile. Herewith, the Love Child’s “Mother Love Child-approved” Liebeskind Spring 3 bags that are as perfect for you as they are for mom.
